Grade 9 students have been building their understanding of two Seamus Heaney poems as part of their preparation for their IGCSE English. The poems 'Digging' and 'Follower' were given to students as stimuli for their thinking about the powerful words and phrases developed by Heaney.
Themes from the poems were identified and represented through theatre in 'freeze frames' and short improvised pieces, as well as visually through 'Word Trails' using photomontage and collage. The students' creativity and insight into Heaney's works really shone through in their responses.
Seven students had also memorised one of the poems by heart in two days and recited them fluently!
