With the winter break approaching, this is a good moment to reflect on some of the great things that have happened within the House System in the Secondary School so far this academic year. Earlier on in the year, our Houses published their visions and highlighted the importance of our House actions in creating opportunities for students to learn cultural awareness, respect, tolerance and teamwork, and which I would like to share with you.
Air House students have been spending time on weekends volunteering at the Berlin Obdachlosenhilfe. This involves spending many hours chopping up fruit and vegetables to assist in the preparation of hearty meals which were delivered to the homeless. Our students have also helped serve hot meals, tea and coffee at Leopoldplatz.
Earth House are busy working to ensure that there is a plant in every secondary classroom. The pots for the plants are to be created from large recycled water bottles and will be self-watering, ensuring their survival for the times when students and staff are not in school. The plants will be planted and grown by our Earth House students.
Fire House has led the first "in school donation drive", hosting a break time “Tea Fundraising Bake Sale” which raised 140 euros.
Water House introduced the “cookie gift” project, where students baked cookies and muffins on request and which were handed out those that placed orders for them. This way they raised money towards the Water House charity.
More house actions have been planned - which you can see here http://www.bmssecondary.com/events
In addition, to our House actions, students have planned and led some excellent assemblies on the following topics, which help reinforce our house actions and visions.
International mindedness and world peace
Why do we label people?
US presidential elections
Are we considerate people? (http://www.bmssecondary.com/single-post/2016/12/16/What-is-Kindness)
Being helpful and caring
House actions across the whole school have also raised money for ‘Save the Children’ by wearing Christmas jumpers.
We now look forward to our final week of the Semester in which Water house will be having a public speaking competition on the following topics:
